The Role of Ritalin

Ritalin is the brand name for a brain stimulant known as methylphenidate. The drug has been on the market since 1955, but its use began to skyrocket in 1981, when it became the drug of choice for ADHD. Since 1990, Ritalin production has grown by 400 percent. Ninety percent of all Ritalin prescriptions are written in the United States, where more than 2 million kids currently take the drug.
Using Ritalin enhances the flow of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain, which has the effect of "turning the volume up" on brain cell activity and increasing the attention span of the user.

Although it's a stimulant, the drug has the paradoxical effect of decreasing restlessness in children with ADHD. (Ritalin is also used to treat narcolepsy, the uncontrollable desire to sleep.)
Possible side effects include weight loss, insomnia, nausea, dizziness, head aches and irritability. To date, there's no evidence that Ritalin causes long-term side effects in children.
Recently, there have been a number of reports of teenagers taking Ritalin as a recreational drug — if you don't have ADHD, it provides a not-unpleasant "buzz".

How Americans Feel About Gay Rights
A 1996 Newsweek poll of 779 American adults revealed these opinions:

Equal Job Opportunities for Gay Americans:
84 percent of Americans support them.

Equal Housing Rights for Gay Americans:
80 percent support them.

Newsweek estimated a 4-percent margin of error for the total sample; a 5-percent margin for registered voters and people who oppose gay marriages; and a 7-percent margin for people who favor gay marriages.
